On SD 50902.16, the Manticore was sent across the Romulan Neutral Zone with a new Dorsal Module attached. It contained a stolen Romulan Scout Ship and a Black Ops team who had been surgically altered to look Romulan. Manticore was to "drop off" the Scout Ship in Romulan space, while under cloak, and wait for them to complete their mission and return to Manticore for retrieval. Unfortunately, the Scout Ship's reactor had a fatal containment breach and, on SD 50903.02, all of the Black Ops team, except for one member, blinded by the radiation, were killed in the Dorsal Module just after Manticore reached the drop point.
It turned out that the mission was one of mercy, as the Federation Council had been contacted by a member of the Romulan Senate in hopes of getting aid for a plague, Echococcosis, that was threatening to kill billions of Romulans. Manticore, already under subspace radio silence due to their location in Romulan space, decided to take on the mission itself on SD 50904.06. Members of the Manticore crew were altered to look Romulan and they were able to make contact with a doctor on Romulus, Dr. Jaiysa t'Tamarak in the Echo Lab. With the help of Dr. t'Tamarak, the Manticore Medical and Science teams were able to synthesize an antidote to the plague and barely escaped the planetary defenses and all of Romulan space without being captured. Dr. t'Tamarak returned to the ship with the Echo team and joined Manticore's medical department on SD 50906.29,
